Serra de Aire is a natural park with some of the most beautiful walks. It consists of rugged limestone hills and has a remarkable landscape due to the old stone walls that can be found throughout the park.
The Sierra is surrounded by pine forest and a magnificent panoramic view allowing enjoy the peace and pleasure of well-deserved spirit.
Dinosaur Footprints
Caving
The Natural Monument of Dinosaur Footprints of Sierra de Aire, on the eastern edge of the Aire mountains in the neighbourhood of the village, in the Natural Park, contains an important fossil record of the Jurassic period, in the footsteps of some of the greatest things that ever populated the planet Earth: the dinosaurs sauropods. In limestone slab where the footprints were preserved over 175 million years (Middle Jurassic) known as Quarry Chicken of the deposit, can be observed around 20 rails or tracks, one with 147m and another with 142m long. The sauropods were powerful animals, herbivores, quadrupeds, small and tail head and long neck. The tail would possibly to defend themselves from predators; the neck, such as the tail, these animals help maintain balance, allowing them to reach the higher vegetation and make them more competitive with smaller animals.
Caves of Mira de Aire
Caving
Considered, since September 2010, one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal, the Mira de Aire Caves, discovered in 1947, in addition to the natural beauty that impose the rooms that feature, still are, the biggest tourist caves in Portugal, and to the public 600 meters of 11km that compose them and receiving, currently, about 6 million visitors. The dimensions, beauty and ecological importance of these caves, associated with a polje with periodic flooding, allowed them to be classified as Property Public Interest (1955) and Ramsar Site (2005), and also as a place of unquestionable interest for studies and speleological investigations that take place regularly.
Algar da Malhada de Dentro
Caving
Located about 340 meters high, toward the foot of the northern slope of the Serra de Aire, is among the few potholes in the region that reaches fossil galleries. After the descent of the initial well with about 50 meters is reached a wide gallery that develops in north-south and reaches a length of about 100 meters. The central and northern part of this gallery is quite rough but in the south the morphology becomes and the recent rebates ceiling dominate the landscape. A narrow passage, and another half-height on the east wall of the inlet pit give access to other parts of the cave with some curious aspects not to be missed by the visitor interested in the study the evolution of this cavity and the region.
Climbs
The climbing Poio d’Aire is born from a climbing routes equipment design that leg on Rail has made assessment of the direction of the Natural Park of Aire and Candeeiros (PNSAC), in mid-September 2006 and this approved.
